Textmate I was using in conjunction with Atom, because there have been some things it did better than Atom (search, tab-triggered macros, not using all of your RAM) although TBH Textmate was not really fast enough.
Some authors of Atom have started work on another hype editor calledZed.
It aims to be collaborative-first, graphics accelerated and responsive, presumably at the expense of accessibility and extensibility?
Currently vapourware with much hype on hackernews but not actually something AFAICS.

Best Linux Tools

I often treat it just like a great investigative tool.
If there’s an issue, I tend to go to the server and will pull up vim.
However, if some big request will come in and requires changing multiple files in a repository, i quickly will usually choose the IDE – I prefer Jet Brains – though this isn’t ALWAYS the case.
IDEs are designed to contain your full toolchain in the single GUI.
That makes them push plenty of info on a developer, and because they’re achieving this and the toolchain outputs a lot more information than any GUI can contain, they ignore the actual toolchain behind it.
Emacs handles this by giving an over-all interface to similar capability for every language it knows.

Due to Kakoune relying heavily on being in a Unix-like environment, no native Windows version is planned.

VS Code includes a snazzy SSH plugin which allows someone to edit remote files, without installing anything on the remote.
IIRC, it only works with Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL/CentOS machines, presently.
And VS Code has integrated terminal one can split into multiple panes.

So somehow everything has changed, but vim survived.
And the reason why vim survived ought to be the fact that people don’t like switching to new things?
That is why people still use ed… oh wait that certain is dead, maybe it really is too old?

  • I can open archives in Vim , I could use Vim without GUI .
  • by way of a petulant child.
  • Ever hear the old saw that “emacs is an excellent operating system with a terrible editor”?
  • There are a handful of impressive YT videos demonstrating it.
  • The reason why programmers like me still use it is because it’s a text editor compiled by programmers for programming.
